We know that Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) is about giving every child a voice and a way to connect with the world around them. We know that understanding the different elements of AAC can make a big difference in how we support and empower communication for those who need it.
And we know that there’s a lot to learn, as many HIE families can attest as they navigate their own AAC journeys—discovering what works best, how to access tools, the resources available to them, and all of the jargon that comes with it.
So, in honor of October as AAC Awareness Month and as a helpful preparatory step before our upcoming Navigating AAC: HIE Peer Perspective stream this week, we want to give you an A-Z breakdown of AAC terms. Whether you’re just starting to look into AAC for your child or simply looking to expand your knowledge, we hope these key terms can help you feel more confident and informed!
Disclaimer: This is not a comprehensive list of AAC terms and is meant to provide a basic understanding. For more detailed information or guidance, please consult your OT, SLP, medical specialist team, or AAC specialist.
