Building Tables, Breaking Barriers for HIE Research and Development

April 23rd, 2025  | News  | Research

Over the last 2-3 years, HIE scientific advancement has been accelerating at a quick pace — both in finding ways to learn more to decrease the incidence of neonatal and pediatric-acquired HIE, and in therapeutic and care advancements to improve the quality of life for babies, children and families.

Hope for HIE has been a pivotal part in the HIE research ecosystem, meeting regularly with those in both academic and bioscience scientific advancement, and from all around the world. Our organization’s perspective, ability to connect the right people to each other across the landscape of innovation in care and research, and infuse patient-family lived experiences from the beginning, has led to a formalized partnership pathway and the Halo of Support longitudinal clinical trial support model.

In addition, as announced in April 2025 during HIE Awareness Month, Hope for HIE’s Executive Director, Betsy Pilon, has been the driving force of the formation of a task force through C-Path’s International Neonatal Consortium, dedicated to multi-stakeholder engagement in a pre-competitive environment with academia, patient advocacy, regulatory, and industry partners. Pilon has been serving on the coordinating committee and the Neonatal Seizures workgroup of INC since 2022 representing the global HIE community through Hope for HIE.

The task force’s initial goals include the following:

  • Validate biomarkers and early endpoints
  • Optimize clinical trial design
  • Harmonize global efforts
  • Align early with regulators
  • Embed the patient-family perspective
