Evaluating Research Articles: A Question Prompt Tool

Evaluating whether a research article is applicable to your child’s medical diagnosis can be challenging, but crucial for making informed health decisions. There is so much information that you can access, but sometimes it’s hard to know what may have promise for your child, what isn’t ready yet to try, what may have already been proven or disproven to work and be safe, and what may be on the horizon. And, there is also a lot of misinformation out there, especially with HIE.

We’ve developed this Question Prompt Tool to help you critically assess the relevance and reliability of a research article you may come across in searching for information.


Understanding the Basics

  1. What is the main focus of the research article?
    • Identify the key objective or hypothesis of the study.
  2. Is the article published in a reputable, peer-reviewed journal?
    • Ensure the article has undergone rigorous peer review by experts in the field. There are a few different resources to help.

Relevance to Your Child’s Condition

  1. Does the study specifically address your child’s medical diagnosis?
    • Check if the study is directly related to the exact condition your child has.
  2. What stage of research is the article based on (preclinical, clinical trials, etc.)?
    • Determine if the findings are from animal studies, early-phase human trials, or later-stage clinical trials.
  3. Are the participants in the study similar to your child’s demographic (age, gender, ethnicity, etc.)?
    • Consider if the study’s population matches your child’s characteristics.

Study Design and Methodology

  1. How large was the study sample size?
    • Larger sample sizes typically provide more reliable results.
  2. What type of study was conducted (randomized controlled trial, observational study, etc.)?
    • Understand the design and strength of the study.
  3. What were the inclusion and exclusion criteria for participants?
    • Assess if the criteria align with your child’s health status and condition.

Results and Interpretation

  1. What were the main findings of the study?
    • Summarize the key outcomes and results.
  2. How statistically significant and clinically meaningful are the results?
    • Consider both the statistical significance and practical relevance of the findings.
  3. Are there any reported side effects or adverse reactions?
    • Pay attention to potential risks and side effects mentioned in the study.

Applicability and Expert Opinions

  1. How do the study’s findings compare to current standard treatments for your child’s condition?
    • Evaluate if the new findings offer a significant improvement over existing treatments.
  2. Have other experts or studies confirmed or supported these findings?
    • Look for consensus or validation from other research or medical experts.

Practical Considerations

  1. What are the potential benefits and risks of applying these findings to your child’s treatment?
    • Weigh the advantages and disadvantages based on the study’s results.
  2. Is the treatment or intervention available and approved for use in your location?
    • Check the accessibility and regulatory approval of the proposed treatment.

Consultation and Final Steps

  1. Have you discussed the article with your child’s healthcare provider?
    • Always consult with a healthcare professional before making any changes based on research findings.
  2. What are the next steps recommended by your child’s healthcare team?
    • Follow the guidance of medical professionals for further actions or additional research.
