Community Driven Research: Dental Disparities

February 12th, 2024  | Advocacy  | News  | ORAL HEALTH

You may have noticed we are spotlighting the patient-family experience of impacts to dental and oral healthcare, and you’re right! Children with HIE are at greater risk for certain oral health impacts, and in the context of disability, there is a significant disparity experienced by medically complex children and families to access the same care as typically developing children.

You can help shape this research by filling out the survey below:

Dr. Matt Mara, DDS, a HIE parent, professor, researcher, dentist AND on our Medical Advisory Board, is working on a research project through Boston University as a part of his research in oral health disparities.

More information is posted in our closed parent support hub, if you are an eligible member, which can be accessed below:

RESOURCE VIDEOS

We have two new resource videos for the community that speak to the impacts to oral health and teeth, which can surprise some families, as well as disparities experienced in the HIE community and beyond in disability community.

Our Peer Perspective event featured Dawn Hamilton, mom to Emerson, who discussed her journey of getting appropriate dental and orthodontic care for her daughter, along with Matt Mara’s peer perspective seeing the disparities firsthand.

In the Q&A with Dr. Matt Mara, we go into specific impacts to oral health, and discuss the background of how the community-driven research he is leading came to be.
